3 Tips for Boating with Dogs

For many Americans, dogs are an important part of the family. So when planning a family boating trip, they are, of course, included in the plan. Although dogs have specific needs and can make time out on the water a little more difficult, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t include them. Our team at Bremer Jet Ski and Watercraft Rental, Inc. wants to remind you that dogs are adaptable, so if you take the time to get them used to riding in a boat, there’s no reason to leave them behind on your next family boat outing. Read on for a few safety tips we’ve put together to give you a smooth day out on the water with your furry friends.

1.Consider Their Safety

Any time you are out on a boat, you need to make sure there are life vests available for everyone on board, including your dog. You can find life jackets specifically made for dogs at most boating stores and pet shops, so invest in one right away if you plan on bringing your dog on board. Even though most dogs can naturally swim, unpredictable water conditions or fatigue could cause your dog to drown, so don’t risk it. Also, make sure the jacket you purchase fits your dog properly and is a bright color so you can easily spot him in the water.

2. Bring Plenty of Fresh Water

Even though you’ll be surrounded by water, it’s not a good idea to let your dog drink from the lake. Freshwater lakes are often contaminated and contain harmful organisms that your dog shouldn’t ingest. Instead, take plenty of fresh drinking water with you and have it available as much as possible. Don’t forget that on a hot day out on the water, your dog will be at risk of getting dehydrated, so keep the fresh water flowing!

3. Watch Out for Sun Exposure

Finally, make sure you’re mindful of the amount of sun exposure your dog is getting. Just as humans need protection from the sun’s harmful rays, so do dogs. Short-haired dogs can even get sunburned if they spend too much time in the sun. Talk to you vet or do some research about dog-safe sunscreens and provide your dog with shade whenever possible.
