You’ve seen them on the water, those graceful two-hulled boats that seem to glide effortlessly along. Catamarans are experiencing a major increase in popularity among boaters of all experience levels. Because they’re easier to sail than single-hulled sailboats, catamarans are very versatile. Looking to rent a catamaran while exploring Minnesota’s lakes? Bremer Jet Ski and Watercraft Rental has you covered. Make your reservation online or give us a call at (612) 298-7055.
What’s a Catamaran?
The word catamaran is derived from a Tamil word, kattumaran, which literally means “logs tied together.” The catamaran’s two hulls are of equal size, and the boat is stabilized by the wide crossbeam. This makes catamarans much less susceptible to capsizing than single-hulled sailboats. The shape and configuration of the boat also gives them less resistance to moving through the water than single hulls. In addition, they can handle shallow water that a sailboat couldn’t manage. In short, they’re easier to sail, can go more places, and they’re easier to keep upright.
Where Can I Learn More?
If you would like some official certification-level classes, the American Sailing Association offers a course called ASA114: Cruising Catamaran. This is a great course if you already have monohull cruising experience and want to transfer that knowledge to sailing a catamaran. You’ll learn practical sailing skills and gain in-depth knowledge abut multihull sailing.
